All of our candidates have rejected the crown, and the more I ponder it, the more I realize that they were right. We journeyed in the delusion that we’re looking for a hero, but in truth, we were just hoping for a shoulder to place our responsibility on. The time has come for us to carry this weight. When we think of crowns, we are often reminded of unjust rulers and an outdated, often tyrannical form of government.

To me however, a crown also symbolizes responsibility and burden. An expectation to lead and to be an example to everyone else. While kings and queens might have disappeared (for the most part), crowns have not: they just transformed into a burden that we share among all of us. Unfortunately, instead of carrying this weight responsibly, we have become a house divided against itself.

In these troubled times, I feel like many of us who are not privileged have been hoping for someone to unite us and channel our frustration into a catalyst for real societal change. Someone to become a Monarch For The Rest Of Us.

But I don't believe we'll find someone like that. And even if we did, it would be unfair to push our burdens on one person. We wear this crown together and it's time to act like we are worthy of it.
